A simple Google search on “buy email list” will show a long list of companies claiming to “sell” quality email addresses … at unbelievable low prices … such as 100,000 affluent email addresses for $399. Unfortunately there’s no such thing!

Sure, having 1,000,000 subscribers is the best thing that could ever happen to any Internet Marketer and often sounds too good to be true. But very often, it always sound too good to be true.

What many beginning marketers do not really know is that these bulk companies harvest the email addresses using robots and other wares on the Internet. That is how the 1,000,000 email addresses come about, whatever the amount is.

Now, the really awful part is that if you purchase the so-called 1,000,000 names even at a low price, not only is it a waste of money, you are risking being accused of spamming. It is no longer a surprise how you often receive spam mails on Viagra, OEM Software and things you do not even need in your inbox.

That is so possible, because of the 1,000,000 names, no one knows you or even ask to be subscribed to your mailing list.

On top of that, not all 1,000,000 email addresses are really in use because a portion of them can either be own by the same owners or are obsolete.

Here are 9 reasons it’s not a good idea to buy an email list:

1. Purchased lists harm your delivery to inboxes;

2. Low response rates because your recipients don’t know you;

3. Reputable email marketing vendors don't let you send emails to lists you've bought;

4. Good email address lists aren't for sale;

5. You Can’t Trust the Quality of the List;

6. You’ll Come Across as a Spammer;

7. "Opt-in" lists for sale usually aren't truly opt-in. Any opt-in claimed by the original list owner is likely a lie or an irrelevancy, perhaps with the "permission to sell my address" buried in terms and conditions that nobody read when they submitted their email address.

8. You’ll Run Into Trouble with Your Email Service Provider ... Your account may well be closed, and you could be fined. The email service provider might even take legal action against you.

9. Most countries have laws against sending out unsolicited bulk email, such as CAN-SPAM in the US. While you may still be on the right side of the law, even using a paid-for list, if lots of subscribers complain (and they probably will!), you may face a costly battle to prove that you didn’t do anything technically wrong.

The bottom line? Never buy an email list... If somebody does offer to sell and send you a bulk list of email addresses, 99 times out of 100 you're getting a spam list. That's a list of addresses of people who have not agreed to receive messages like yours, or a list of extremely dubious quality. If you purchase a list, you have no way of confirming how often those email addresses have been emailed, whether the email addresses on that list have been scrubbed for hard bounces to prevent identifying you as a spammer, or from where those email addresses originated. Are you really willing to risk not only your email deliverability, but also the reputation of your IP address and your company? Even if you find the light after purchasing or renting email lists and decide to only email those who have opted in with your company, it will take you months (or maybe years) to get your Sender Score up and rebuild the reputation of your IP.

When you read such ads again, tell yourself that it is a waste of money.
